Fantasy Football 2014 Week 17 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

There’s really nothing out there at this point, but teams who could rest players: New England, Indianapolis, Dallas. Essentially, guys on these teams who are banged up or just really valuable to the team may be limited. I’m not saying you automatically sit Tom Brady, but looking at T.Y. Hilton and DeMarco Murray, they could be riskier than normal.

Notes:

  • Had Matt Asiata on the list last week and he performed. Probably your safest bet on the waiver wire this week.
  • Rueben Randle showed up for seemingly the first time since Victor Cruz’s injury. Odell Beckham Jr. is still leagues above him, but maybe Randle uses last week’s performance as motivation.
  • Greg Jennings had a TD last week. There’s a ton of options in that Minnesota passing game (Charles Johnson, Jarius Wright, Kyle Rudolph), but someone has to catch touchdowns.
  • Eddie Royal took advantage of Keenan Allen being out (so did Malcolm Floyd). Wouldn’t be surprised to see that happen again.
  • You probably have a tight end, but Zach Ertz and Charles Clay both surpassed the century mark last week.
  • Defenses to add are Houston, Miami, Indianapolis, and Minnesota
  • Kicker love of the week: Randy Bullock

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 16 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Matt Asiata (MIN): As expected, the pickings are going to be slim at this point in the season. Asiata is currently owned in 26.5 of ESPN leagues, so there is a good chance that he will be available in your league. With Jerick McKinnon on IR, Asiata has been the only running back to have any impact in Minnesota and doesn’t have to worry about losing any goal line carries.

Joseph Randle/Lance Dunbar (DAL): The Cowboys have announced that they expect DeMarco Murray to play in this week’s game against Indianapolis. With that being said, JUST IN CASE Murray can’t go, all Murray-owners should own one or both of the other Dallas running backs, Randle and Dunbar. Just for reference, on Sunday, Randle had 2 carries for 13 yards and Dunbar had 5 carries for 22 yards. They have pretty evenly split backup duties, so if Murray can’t go, follow the Cowboys to see who they announce as the starter. It could end up being a situation where they go with the hot hand.

Carlos Hyde (SF): Frank Gore left Sunday’s game with a concussion and Hyde took over….for about one series. Hyde injured his ankle and left the game allowing the third string back, Alfonso Smith, to see the field. Hyde has done well when Gore has rested and even with the struggles of Colin Kaepernick, Hyde will be a good option this week.

Notes:

  • Shonn Greene and Toby Gerhart in similar situations. Both on terrible teams, but led that team in carries in Week 15. Could be valuable if you’re desperate.
  • Charles Johnson with 7 or more points in 4 of the last 5 weeks.
  • Defenses to add are Packers, Giants, and Titans
  • Kicker love of the week: Dan Carpenter

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 15 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Johnny Manziel (CLE): Well, it’s that time in Cleveland. Manziel was officially named the starter on Tuesday and I’m sure many Browns fans are celebrating through the roof. I personally don’t really like Manziel, but I know that he’s going to be the most popular quarterback add of the week, which is why he makes the list. He obviously has the ability to run, but I think that the NFL is much more adept at adjusting to a mobile quarterback than in college. Sure Russell Wilson has had a few 100-yard games, but Wilson is also more talented and experienced than Manziel. Playoffs are well underway, so you probably aren’t still alive if you have like Eli Manning as your quarterback. But in case you miraculously survived, Manziel will most likely be between #15-20 in my rankings this week.

Kerwynn Williams (ARI): Who is Kerwynn Williams?! Well he’s a rookie out of Utah State who saw the first carries of his career on Sunday. With Andre Ellington out for the year, it looked like Marion Grice or Stepfan Taylor was going to be next in line. I mean, they even signed Michael Bush who could have vultured some touchdowns. Head coach Bruce Arians said that he simply stuck with the hot hand which is why Williams received so many carries and said that Taylor is still the starting running back. All that does is make our jobs more difficult. Will Williams or Taylor be the biggest factor this week? It’s tough to say right now. But you can’t ignore Williams’ performance.

Notes:

  • Don’t really want to put this above since he’s owned in 47.4 of ESPN leagues, but Jonathan Stewart had a season-best 155 yards on Sunday. With DeAngelo Williams out and Cam Newton possibly held back by his car accident (hope he gets well soon), Stewart could be in line for another good week.
  • Doug Martin still the starter in Tampa Bay. Obviously not a great option, but hey, starters are starters.
  • Going off of Williams, Taylor would be a nice add in case Arians sticks to what he said Monday.
  • Latavius Murray is still relevant (still only owned in 31.1 of ESPN leagues).
  • With injuries at receiver, Titans turned to Derek Hagan this past week who caught 6 balls for 62 yards. Not pretty, but sufficient.
  • A lot going on in Minnesota these days, Charles Johnson and Jarius Wright both had big games. However, Greg Jennings and Kyle Rudolph could always have big games next week leaving Johnson and Wright in the dust.
  • If Torrey Smith is held back again, Kamar Aiken could have another big role in the Ravens offense.
  • Defenses to pick up are Ravens, Giants, Chiefs, and Panthers.

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 14 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Daniel Herron (IND): I had Herron here last week and he performed! I’m putting him here again because he’s going to be the biggest pickup. He only had 8 carries on Sunday, but was able to turn them into 88 yards and a touchdown (but also a fumble). His counterpart, Trent Richardson, received 8 carries as well, but being Trent Richardson, he only mustered 12 yards. The Colts surprisingly didn’t run the ball very much against Washington, but they’re still a high-powered offense, so the carries will increase. Herron certainly proved himself over Richardson and the Colts would be silly to not take advantage of it.

Stedman Bailey (STL): I’m putting Bailey on here just because it’s hard to ignore two good weeks in a row (14 and 10 respectively). When Brian Quick first got injured, I thought Kenny Britt was going to be next in line (and he was for the first couple weeks), but his production has tailed off and Bailey’s has certainly risen. It might be tough for any Rams receiver to clearly put himself above the rest of the pack, but in deeper leagues, Bailey might be worth a look. I’m assuming that teams in 10 and 12-team leagues already have established receivers, so you most likely won’t need Bailey unless you REALLY need a safety net.

At this point in the season, there’s really not a lot out there. Herron is a must along with Kenny Stills (mentioned below). Every league is different, so if there’s someone out there I haven’t mentioned because they’re owned in more than 50% of leagues, just send me a tweet and I’ll help you work through it.

Notes:

  • Jonathan Stewart turned in double digits for the second time in three weeks, while DeAngelo Williams only gave owners 2 fantasy points.
  • With Bishop Sankey’s struggles, Shonn Greene might become more than just a touchdown vulture as the season winds down.
  • KENNY STILLS (would have put him up top, but what more can I say about him that I haven’t already said previously?)
  • Donte Moncrief and Davante Adams are in similar situations. Both coming off good games, both in high-powered offenses, but both are still the third or fourth options. They’re extremely risky and similar to Bailey, only add if you REALLY need a safety net.
  • In a world where tight ends are terrible, Jordan Reed could have actually become relevant again.
  • Defenses to pick up are Vikings and Ravens. Not a lot, but most of the owned defenses are the ones poised to have good weeks.

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 13 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Latavius Murray (OAK): Murray was able to generate 23 fantasy points on only FOUR carries on Thursday night. He did leave the game with concussion-like symptoms and will need to pass protocol before being able to play Sunday at St. Louis. In the pre-season, I had said that Murray would be the most productive Raiders running back ahead of Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew. He most likely won’t have time to surpass them in points, but based on his production, the Raiders’ coaching staff has to use him often the way their season has gone. The Kansas City defense is nothing to scoff at, so I don’t worry about his production being a one-hit wonder.

LeGarrette Blount (NE): Hmmm, just a week ago, I had Jonas Gray on here after his career performance. However, Gray showed up late to practice during the week, which Bill Belichick clearly did not take kindly to because Gray didn’t see the field once Sunday. In his stead, Blount saw the majority of the carries and scored two touchdowns in his return to New England. So what now? The Patriots’ backfield is as murky as it’s ever been and to be honest, I wouldn’t trust any of them at this point. One week, Blount will do well, the next, Gray will see 25 carries. Who knows, maybe even Shane Vereen will return from the dead! Blount can be picked up, but other than being a goal line vulture, he may not see as much action as he did Sunday.

Daniel Herron (IND): I ranked Herron 34th last week even though he hadn’t seen much playing time mainly because of Indianapolis’ matchup against the Jaguars. With Ahmad Bradshaw out with a broken ankle, I don’t know how much confidence the Colts have in Trent Richardson being the sole back in their running game. On Sunday, Richardson had 13 carries compared to Herron’s 12. However, Herron was able to outgain Richardson by 23 yards. The only savior of Richardson’s day was his touchdown. Herron could be more of a yardage back, but hey, that gets points too. It’s not too often that three decent running backs are available this late in the season, so if Blount or Murray are taken, maybe give Herron a look.

Jarvis Landry (MIA): Don’t look now, but Landry has had 4 touchdowns in 4 weeks down in Miami. He’ll be more valuable in PPR leagues as he’s also averaged 6 catches per week in that span. Mike Wallace is still the best option for Ryan Tannehill, but other than that, the passing game doesn’t offer up a lot of threats. I’m pretty sure defenses aren’t cowering in fear over Brian Hartline and Charles Clay. Ride Landry while he’s hot.

Notes:

  • Charles Johnson has had two decent weeks in a row. Only really viable in deeper leagues, but in an offense that needs weapons, Johnson could be an answer.
  • John Brown was the only Cardinal to do anything last week. Tough matchup, but still playing pretty consistently.
  • Kenny Stills lived up to his hype from last week. He’ll get a boost in my rankings this week.
  • Tim Wright requires touchdowns to do well, but if you’re desperate, you’re desperate.
  • Defenses to pick up are Giants, Rams, Ravens, and Bengals.
