Fantasy Football 2014 Week 9 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Charles Sims (TB): Sims is finally eligible to come off of injured reserve in Week 9 and he’s coming into a miserable situation for Tampa Bay. Doug Martin has really struggled running the ball and it isn’t like Bobby Rainey has been lights out either. Obviously, there is no guarantee that Lovie Smith will immediately give him the workload, but if anyone has some upside in the Buccaneers backfield, it’s Sims. I know they liked him a lot during camp, so it’s worth a shot. Especially in a thin week for waiver adds.

Brandon LaFell (NE): On a historic day for Tom Brady, LaFell, not Julian Edelman, had the great day for New England wide receivers. Edelman has had single digit point totals 5 of the last 6 weeks as LaFell has clearly become a bigger part of the offense. He’s a bigger receiver, so maybe Edelman will work more out of the slot and continue his short catches while LaFell will be the bigger threat on the outside. At any rate, LaFell is a proven asset to Brady’s passing, so can be added and started in standard leagues.

Kenny Britt (STL): With Brian Quick now out for the season, the St. Louis wide receiver job is pretty much up for grabs. In his absence, Britt had 52 yards on 2 catches. Obviously, Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin, and Austin Pettis are all factors along with the two tight ends, Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks, but I’m going to say Britt becomes the biggest factor out of all of them. Austin Davis has done a decent job this year and with questions at running back, the passing game will play more of a role. This is strictly for deeper leagues as there is too much risk in choosing one Ram to leap ahead of the others.

Notes:

  • Denard Robinson had the best performance of the waiver wire running backs of Week 8. As long as Jacksonville is using him, so should you.
  • Don’t know how ready I am to jump back on the Lorenzo Taliaferro bandwagon.
  • Juwan Thompson could steal some touchdowns from Ronnie Hillman, but not worth owning.
  • Jonas Gray had 17 touches against the Bears. Maybe he steps into Stevan Ridley’s role and Shane Vereen once again takes a backseat?
  • Allen Robinson has a touchdown in 2 straight weeks.
  • Odell Beckham Jr. still only owned in 23% of leagues.
  • Martavis Bryant with 3 touchdowns in 2 weeks. Loved his skill-set during training camp. Putting on a show now in the regular season.
  • Going off of Britt, Jared Cook could be a tight end available in your league if Martellus Bennett is on bye for you this week.
  • Tough week for waiver wire defenses, but I would be ok with Washington, Cleveland, and if you’re desperate: Indianapolis or Minnesota.
  • Kicker love of the week: Cody Parkey.

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 8 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Denard Robinson (JAC): It’s kind of funny how just last week, Robinson’s teammate Storm Johnson was on here. Head coach Gus Bradley announced before Sunday’s game that Robinson would get the start, so hopefully you saw that. IF you didn’t, Johnson still got into the endzone to sort of salvage the day. But after the team picked up their first win and Robinson eclipsed the 100-yard mark, it’s most likely going to be Robinson’s job to lose. As I said last week, it’s tough to like any player in Jacksonville, but if they’re the default running back, they’re worth owning. Don’t expect too many more victories from this team, but maybe the ex-Wolverine can rack up some points before the team is getting blown out.

Anthony Dixon (BUF): It’s not too often that two running backs from the same team get injured in one game, but the Bills managed to pull that off Sunday. C.J. Spiller broke his clavicle and is out for the year and Fred Jackson injured his groin and is reported to be out for about a month. In their stead, Dixon tallied 51 yards on 13 carries. Nothing too spectacular, but once again, if they’re going to give him the ball, he’s worth owning. However, don’t forget about Bryce Brown. He’s been inactive the first seven weeks, but figures to see an expanded role. He showed flashes of being a good back in Philadelphia and I’m actually quite surprised that the Bills haven’t used him at all this year.

Tre Mason (STL): Surprisingly (although not too surprising), Zac Stacy had zero touches on Sunday surrendering most of them to Mason and some to Benny Cunningham. In one of the bigger upsets of the season, St. Louis was quite successful running the ball as Mason picked up 85 yards on 18 carries along with a touchdown. He had a great season last year at Auburn and I’m glad the Rams are giving him a chance. This team has a lot of young weapons and if Sunday is any indication, Mason could be the headliner.

Doug Baldwin (SEA): Could the departure of Percy Harvin have opened up the field for Baldwin? I’m leaning yes as he nearly doubled his season-high in catches. Granted, the Seahawks were down early which usually isn’t the case. The normal game plan is to have Marshawn Lynch run it down the defense’s throat, but when you’re losing 21-3 in the first half, running the ball loses its profitability. They still aren’t a pass-first offense which limits Baldwin’s ceiling, but in a receiving corps lacking a true No. 1, Baldwin could be the guy.

Notes:

  • Ryan Tannehill facing Jacksonville; averaging 20 points per game in last three games.
  • In three games Carson Palmer has played, hasn’t scored under 16 points.
  • Written about Jerick McKinnon before. Minnesota proved that he’s now their running back; has a great matchup against Tampa Bay.
  • I don’t know what more you want from Ronnie Hillman.
  • Brandon LaFell is becoming more and more of a factor in the New England offense.
  • Defenses to pick up are Miami, Indianapolis, and if you’re desperate, Minnesota.
  • I don’t usually do kickers, but give Chandler Catanzaro some love. Hasn’t scored less than 7 points in a game and averages 10.5 per game (3rd best).

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 7 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Storm Johnson (JAC): It’s really hard to like any Jacksonville player, especially a running back, but Johnson did get the majority of the carries Sunday (and the lone rushing touchdown). Granted, it definitely wasn’t a pretty performance as his 2.1 YPC shows, but if you’re the player getting the most touches in a backfield, you’re worth owning, even if it’s at the end of my bench. Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson, and Jordan Todman are all still around and will see some snaps, which definitely makes me a little nervous. I’ll probably rank him low 30’s this week making him a bench player for now.

Jerick McKinnon (MIN): As somewhat of a surprise this weekend, the Vikings decided to go with McKinnon rather than Matt Asiata as the lead running back. Other than the three-touchdown week against Atlanta, Asiata hadn’t done too much taking over for Adrian Peterson, so maybe Minnesota is ready to turn it over to someone else. McKinnon will be especially valuable in PPR leagues as he actually had more receiving yards than rushing yards against Detroit. With a tough matchup against Buffalo this week, he may not be a starter in 10-team leagues (maybe even 12-team depending on your roster), but deeper leagues will be happy they stashed him.

Brandon Bolden (NE): Nothing eye-opening here, but Bolden had the most carries other than Stevan Ridley Sunday. With Ridley now out for the year with a torn ACL, Bolden could be in line for more snaps. Shane Vereen is still there, but for some reason, they really haven’t used him much. We could see a committee form, but if you have room on your team, Bolden could be worth an add just in case New England likes what they see out of him at practice this week.

Odell Beckham Jr. (NYG): Even with Victor Cruz still in the lineup, Beckham Jr. was already a factor in the offense. Now that Cruz is out for the year with a torn patellar tendon, he and Rueben Randle figure to see a bigger workload. Eli Manning really struggled Sunday night against the Eagles, but they look to get the passing game back on track against Dallas this week. The Cowboys have been better than many expected on defense, but I still give the Giants a chance to get two receivers in the endzone this week. I’ll most likely have Randle rated higher than Beckham Jr., but both are now worthy of being owned in all leagues.

Notes:

  • Various QB’s can help you out this week if you have Nick Foles on bye: Joe Flacco home against ATL (36.4%), Brian Hoyer at JAC (3.9%), or Carson Palmer at OAK (6.4%)
  • Ronnie Hillman still only owned in 5.3% of leagues. 11 points this past week in an offense proving that he’s the main guy behind Montee Ball. Even against San Francisco, he’s valuable.
  • Antoine Smith is somehow the 10th rated running back points-wise. I’m amazed he’s been able to keep it up, but it seems he has one big play every week that gets him double digits. I wouldn’t pick him up, but I’m still surprised.
  • Benny Cunningham scored the touchdown Monday night, not Zac Stacy. Tre Mason led the team in rushing. Committee forming in St. Louis?
  • In deep leagues, James White could be valuable as the next running back behind Bolden in New England.
  • A.J. Green out again this week, Mohamed Sanu owned in 38.9% of leagues.
  • Malcolm Floyd has averaged over 10 points per week in the last four weeks. I’d ride him while Philip Rivers is hot.
  • Defenses to pick up this week are Bills (if available), Browns, and if desperate, Redskins.

Fantasy Football 2014 Week 6 Waiver Wire

By Bobby Moodispaugh

Branden Oliver (SD): The Chargers are now on their fourth running back of the season, but they may have found the best of the bunch. Comparisons have been made between Oliver and ex-Charger Darren Sproles and not just because they both wear 43 on their backs. He stands at only 5’8″, but is compact at 207 pounds. He showed Sunday that he’s not afraid of a little contact on a couple tough touchdowns against one of the stronger run defenses in the league. He has an unbelievably favorable matchup against Oakland this week. He is worth a start in all leagues. I repeat, he is worth a start in all leagues. Also, on a side note, can we all just take a moment to look at San Diego’s schedule? Jacksonville, New York, and Oakland in three straight weeks? Thank you very much.

Andre Williams (NYG)/Ronnie Hillman (DEN): I’m grouping Williams and Hillman together because they’re in very similar situations. Rashad Jennings went down with an MCL sprain and is expected to miss about 3 weeks. Montee Ball left Denver’s game with a strained groin and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. Although Williams was only able to muster 65 yards out of 20 carries, he did score for the second straight week. Hillman had 64 yards on 15 carries, but failed to score as Peyton Manning decided to only give the ball to Demaryius Thomas. I see Williams being the more valuable pickup here due to Denver’s pass-happy offense. Not to say that Hillman doesn’t deserve a spot on your roster, but it’s tough when a running back in Denver isn’t as involved in the passing game like Knowshon Moreno was. There is the presence of C.J. Anderson as the third back, but John Fox showed that it’s Hillman’s job to lose Sunday.

Brian Quick (STL): Quick was one of the surprises among wide receiver Sunday racking up 20 points with the help of 2 touchdowns. It’s not every week that Austin Davis is going to throw for 375 yards and the Rams use a TON of receivers (Jared Cook, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Austin Pettis, Kenny Britt), who all had catches on Sunday. Granted Quick was the most dynamic of the group. If I want any St. Louis Ram, it’s Quick. I’ll probably rank him as a flex, but he has some tough matchups against San Francisco and Seattle the next two weeks.

Notes:

  • I think Kirk Cousins’ game against the Giants may have just been a hiccup. Had a good showing against one of the toughest defenses in the league Monday. Next up is an Arizona team that just gave up 31 points to Peyton Manning. Now only owned in 50% of leagues.
  • If you’re desperate, Jake Locker (barring injury) faces the Jaguars this week, which is always a welcoming sight.
  • Justin Forsett got into the endzone for the third time this season. However, his carry total dropped down to 6. With Lorenzo Taliaferro and Bernard Pierce all getting some touches, I don’t see Forsett being a consistent start.
  • Jonathan Stewart could be close to returning from a sprained knee. Teammate DeAngelo Williams is still a week or two away, so if Stewart is able to come back, it will be his backfield Sunday.
  • Mohamed Sanu has had 37 points in the last three weeks of action. But be wary. Week 2: A.J. Green didn’t play. Week 3: Threw a touchdown to Andy Dalton. Week 5: Garbage time in New England. All of those things will not be common the rest of the year.
  • As long as Mike Evans is out, Louis Murphy has been a decent receiver opposite Vincent Jackson. Two straight weeks of 9 points.
  • Defenses to pick up this week are the Titans and Ravens.
